List Yourself

About five years ago, a dear friend gave me a book titled, "List Yourself: Listmaking as the Way to Self-Discovery." It's a book with pages and pages of suggestions for creating lists that will then open the doors to deeper levels of self-discovery. The authors are Ilene Segalove and Paul Bob Velick. (Which makes me wonder why there's not a list topic in there for "List the reasons you gave your child two first names.")

Anyway, I thought it might be fun to try out one of the lists here, so today's list is, "List all the experiences that give you goosebumps." In no particular order:

  • Medal ceremonies at the Olympics
  • Changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier
  • Walking in the battlefields of Gettysburg
  • The Hallelujah Chorus - standing for it, singing it
  • A 21-gun salute
  • Hearing Taps, Reveille, and Pomp and Circumstances
  • Viewing the aftermath of destruction - natural or manmade
  • Walking down a dark alley alone
  • Dogs barking in the dead of night for no apparent reason
  • Hitting my funny bone
  • Seeing dead animals on the road
  • Exquisite beauty portrayed in images or words
  • Fingernails on a chalkboard
  • Recalling close calls, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual
  • Thinking about something good, or bad, happening to my daughters
  • Having my back scratched
  • Having my hair brushed
  • Butterfly kisses on my skin
  • Whispered words of love and passion
  • Sensing evil
  • Sensing goodness or holiness
  • Acts of patriotism or other types of heroism
  • Seeing the "impossible" made possible

What are the things that touch you so deeply, whether for good or bad, that they bring goosebumps? What are the emotions behind those feelings? For me it's often fear, awe, a memory reawakened, or simply a physical reaction.

You know, I'd hate to live without goosebump moments. Even the bad ones. They remind me that I'm alive. That I'm capable of feeling. That the world is still a mysterious place with lots of things to discover.

I hope you enjoy a few goosebump moments today. :-)

There's only a few things that make me go goosebumpy. In no particular order (and funny that most of them are from films!?!?!);

1. The President's speech in Independance Day.
2. When Boromir dies and says "I would have followed you, my Brother, my Captain, my King", in LotR: FotR.
3. When Ben Affleck leaves Bruce Willis on the asteroid in Armageddon.
4. The first few notes of "She's like the wind". Reminds me of my wife.
5. Being kissed, bitten and touched on the neck. (Sounds a bit girly, that :-S ).

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

Mike, I'd love to hear what sort of things you come up with for your list.

Crzy, I'm going to check into "Premium" membership, and then I'll come find you for some help. Thanks for your interest and encouragement.

Tyler, I couldn't agree more. There are a lot of lines from music, movies, and books that give me goosebumps, too. The one that came to mind when I read your comment was the line Mr. Spock says to Jim when he's about to die (please don't ask me which Star Trek movie it was. lol) Spock says, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." And then he died with all the dignity of his Vulcan heritage.

Chloe, thanks for the compliment. I hope you'll share some of your list items, too. And I can't tell you how much I enjoy your blog, too!

Thanks again, everyone.

OK Karen, I'll bite

Nibbling the back of the neck, just on the side and exhaling over the shoulder just with your nostrils, making sure the air crests over the collarbone and down the sternum

Watching a proper flag ceremony fire thing in the morning and saying the pledge loudly

Seeing my kids smile

watching my wife's eyes light up when she sees I have surprised her with flowers again

The first sip of a really well made Martini

Reading a really good blog, especially when you know they just bared their soul to you

singing all four stanzas to Amazing Grace, especially with a group, especially if it is all men and we can do the harmony right.

Really nailing my version of Desparado at a Kareoke Bar, I just love that last note

having my really excellent peripheral vision trick me into believing a car is where it should not be as I change lanes and imagining the accident happening

A cold breeze on a cool day

Descending into the spa when the moon is out

a 24 point cribbage hand

Hitting a golf shot, usually a wdgwe of some sort, high into the air and it landing close to the pin, just as how I imagined it would, just exectly as how I imagined it would, oohhbabybbbbrrrrummmmphh, that just gave a me a shiver right now, I need to play soon.

When Mr. B and I really speak Cat together for a few minutes, just casually, not the hey mike, where's the chow kind, real discourse, it is freaky.

When Chris and Mr. B speak. It is scary sometimes. I've seen them talk for 20 minutes

Listening to Ray Charles sing, damn what perfection

when my wife comes home from work and I am already there. just waiting

That's enough, I could go on for awhile still
